If you run a local business, someone has probably told you that you need "more marketing online." The trouble is that social media marketing, SEO and Google Ads are three different tools that solve three different problems. Buying the wrong one first is an easy way to spend money and see nothing.
This post explains how each one works, what each is good and bad at, and how to decide where to start. We offer managed social media and managed Google Ads, so we will also be upfront about when each one is not the right answer.
They are not rivals. They answer different questions, and the best results for most businesses come from using more than one over time.
Google Ads (formerly AdWords) shows your business at the top of search results for the searches you choose. Someone types "emergency plumber near me," and your ad appears. You pay when someone clicks.

Two budgets are involved: the money you pay Google for clicks, and the fee for whoever manages the account. With our Managed Google Ads plan, you set the ad budget and pay Google directly, and our flat monthly fee covers the management.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the work of making your website, and your Google Business Profile, a good answer to what local customers are searching for. That includes clear service pages, accurate business details, a fast and mobile-friendly site, and signals like reviews and local mentions.

Social media works differently. Most people scrolling Facebook, Instagram or X are not looking to hire anyone. Social marketing is about being familiar, credible and top of mind, so that when they do need your service, your name is the one they remember.
What it is good at
What to watch
| Social media | SEO | Google Ads | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reaches | People who may not be looking yet | People searching, in the unpaid results | People searching, in the paid results |
| Speed | Builds gradually | Slowest to build | Can start quickly |
| Pay per click? | Only for paid social ads | No | Yes |
| When you stop | Your page goes quiet | Past work keeps helping for a while | Visibility stops right away |
| Best for | Awareness, trust, showing your work | Long-term steady visibility | Getting calls and enquiries sooner |
| Main risk | Inconsistency | Impatience, weak website | Wasted spend from poor setup |
Most local businesses do best by combining them over time. Google Ads can bring in enquiries now while SEO builds, and social media keeps your name familiar to the people who see your business but are not ready to buy.
For a local business, a click from someone hundreds of miles away is wasted budget. Both Google Ads and paid social ads let you limit where your ads are shown to the city, county, ZIP codes or radius you actually serve. Platforms decide who is "in" an area using their own location data, which is good but not perfect, so a small amount of spillover is normal. What matters is that the targeting is set up on purpose and reviewed.
Whichever channel you use, decide what a win looks like before you start: phone calls, form submissions, direction requests or booked appointments. Likes and impressions are fine to watch, but they do not pay the bills. Ask whoever runs your marketing to show you the calls and enquiries, not just the activity.
Be wary of anyone who guarantees rankings, leads or sales. Results depend on your market, your competition, your offer, your budget and your website, and no honest provider can promise a number.
